There is general unhappiness with the fact that lucrative tourism is restricted to the summer and to an increasingly narrow period within that season (the frenzied two weeks in August). How else could it be when the only kind of tourism to be encouraged is the one that appreciates the weather and the Beach. Surely we have something more to show, to offer as a tourist attraction. No wonder we have no identity to be proud of, to empower us.... Sun and Beach that is all we can offer (because it cant be fenced off and built upon...yet)
There are not enough serious cultural investments here. Cultural investsments that value local talent, that bring it out, that do it justice. This town is full of creative artistic potential which is smothered and ignored.
Resources, in this town, are embarasingly poor. We need a new library, haven´t got a cinema anymore, haven´t got even a theatre!!!!!! Council grants and financial support to cultural associations, such as drama groups, are constantly being cut. Although the city is expanding it is only a physical expansion not a cultural one and definately not one in mentality or atitudes.
This city has also plenty of arqueological remains from every possible historical and pre-histórical era. These remains are not maximized, but rather seen as obstacles when any new construction wants to be done and tokenistic excavations have to be carried out before the remains are buried forever under concrete. (need to work)
